ECI is
reducing it's activities as a public venue in an effort to work on preserving
it's archives which include the founders involvement in 25 years of Telecollaborative
Arts. Much of our focus is turning to the ongoing challenges of preservation
and the migration path/s of multiple media types in both analog and digital
form, cataloging schemas that maintain the importance of "context," in realtime
telecollaborative art, controlled vocabulary, and interoperability in the
current and emerging world of online archives and relational databases.
We will co-produce and participate in public events throughout the year,
and estimate that ECI will return to more regular programming in the fall.

18TH
STREET ARTS COMPLEX PRESENTS:
Japanese Artists, 'ROGUES'
GALLERY,' who will perform the United
States Premiere of "GASOLINE MUSIC AND
CRUISING" . Their unique automotive performance
will be presented in the form of a video documentation and presenters
who have experienced the piece during the worldwide webcast at Electronic
Cafe International.
18th Street Arts Complex is pleased to present Japanese contemporary
performance artists Yasuhiko Hamachi
and Yukihisa Nakase
, also known as the 'Rogues' Gallery.' Both artists
are in residence as part of 18th Street's International Exchange Program
for three months, and will conclude their visit by presenting "Gasoline
Music and Cruising," a unique automobile performance piece during the
month of March.
Over the past four years in Osaka, Japan, the artists have developed
a "drive performance in a vehicle equipped with a high generating power
sound system, with the drive sound enhanced and strengthened" by converting
their automobile into a traveling sound studio. The nightly 'audience'
consists of two passengers who are transported on an audio/visual experience.
For the first time, the 'Rogues' Gallery' will be conducting their drive
for a limited audience between March 20-31 in Los Angeles.
To bring their performance to a wider arena, 18th Street Arts Complex
is hosting a LIVE webcast at Electronic Cafe International, an 18th
Street Arts Complex anchor tenant, starting at 7:30 PM, Friday, March
24 PST -- or in Tokyo, March 25 at 12:30 PM.
Visit the Rogues' Gallery at their website, http://www.nomart.co.jp/rg/.
or e-mail them at: [email protected]
The Rogues' Gallery residency is supported by generous grants from the
Japan Foundation, the Asian Cultural Council, and the International
Circle Membership at 18th Street.
For further information about the drives, or to attend the webcast,

ABOUT NEW YEAR'S EVE 99/00:
Electronic Cafe International HQ in Santa Monica,
and ECI-Friends & Affiliates around the planet have produced 10 "Around-The-World,
New Year's Eve, TELEBRATIONS" between 1989 & 1999, (Our countdown/s
to the Millennium.) The way we figure it, we've already arrived! Besides,
who's calendar are you going to use anyway???? Even if you were to go
with the domineering western view, how is it that 1999/2000 was chosen
as the "IT" date, when it contradicts the fact that 2000/2001 is really
"IT"???
Anyway, we're setting this one out, getting off the super infomercial
highway, and having chile-dogs and champagne at the beach.
Have a great one, whatever IT is!!!
Best wishes,
See you on the other side!
- Kit & Sherrie
